It looks modern and yet keeps the traditional desktop experience alive. Once you learn how things work, KDE provides the most flexible desktop experience. This can leave you frustrated if you get irritated easily. KDE packs in so many features that you’d more often stumble upon something new that you’ve no idea about. KDE is full of such minor tweaks that really make KDE feel like a polished desktop experience. You can preview the contents of a folder on the desktop with a click. When you move an open window around it automatically becomes semi-transparent. KDE will seem slightly familiar and you can already start installing programs and browsing the internet in no time. Windows could never give you such level of control over the interface. Dig deeper though and each layer you peel through will reveal something fascinating. It has a single panel at the bottom like the Windows taskbar and it does all the same things as well. KDE Plasma will feel a little familiar to Windows users because it, well, looks like it at a glance. KDE Plasma is indeed one of the best if not the best Linux desktop environment you can install on your machine. I don’t know the official stats but I have a feeling KDE is perhaps a fan favorite. That’s not the case if you simply install the desktop shell, however, which is like a launcher, except it does change the entire system UI as well. Each of these comes with its own set of pre-loaded apps as well. Consider these like the custom ROMs on your Android smartphone. Linux systems give you a much greater degree of flexibility though with more than 10 options as far as I know. Windows 7 users actually had some options, and I was quick enough to try all of them. Not because these systems don’t have a desktop environment but because they only have that one desktop environment that you see.
